How thin can you go? New clients continue to be introduced, like HP’s unveiling of the t310 G2 All-in-One Zero Client in January. With client types on the market ranging from traditional thick desktop computers to PC over IP zero clients and everything in between, IT decision-makers are left with tough questions as they try to parse out the differences and best uses of various client types.
By considering the particular strengths of thick clients vs. thin clients vs. zero clients around several key attributes, IT teams can implement the right solutions to meet the need of their businesses.
What Is a Zero Client: The Security Benefits and Beyond
One of the signature strengths of zero clients is security. Because a zero client has no local operating system, the avenues of attack are radically reduced.
But, says David Johnson, a principal analyst at Forrester, even a zero client carries some degree of vulnerability.
“Zero clients have at least some firmware,” says Johnson. “Firmware is vulnerable to attack, or can be. But in general, it should be easier to secure a zero client. With an entire PC there are a lot of attack surfaces.”
intel took the stage at CES 2020 to deliver their keynote like they do kind of year after year and right in the middle of it they took a few minutes to talk about the progress that they’ve made on project Athena and then they made a surprising announcement to a lot of us and that is a partnership with Google surrounding this whole idea of project Athena laptops and then they went further and debuted a couple new Chromebooks the Samsung Galaxy Chromebook in the Asus Chromebook as project Athena Chromebooks and all of this is very important and if you’re hearing all of that and going I don’t know what any of that means we kind of didn’t really either and so we did some research and I’d like to tell you about it
10ZiG to Demo BCR via Experimental CER Feature in Citrix Workspace App on Linux-Based Thin Client at Citrix Summit
10ZiG Technology is demonstrating improved Browser Content Redirection using the Chromium Embedded Framework feature via the Citrix Workspace App on 10ZiG Linux-Based Thin Clients today at Citrix Summit 2020.
ORLANDO, FLORIDA – 10ZiG Technology® is conducting live demonstrations of the Citrix Workspace App’s Browser Content Redirection (BCR) using Chromium Embedded Framework (CEF), displaying its performance improvements, on 10ZiG Linux-Based Thin Clients at Citrix Summit booth #502. In the recent release of Citrix Workspace App for Linux Version 1912, Citrix added support to BCR utilizing the experimental CEF-based engine. This enriches the experience on Thin Clients, as it helps to offload network usage, client-side processing, and graphics rendering directly to the endpoint.
BCR redirects contents of a web browser to a Client device/endpoint, creating a corresponding browser that embeds within the Citrix Workspace App itself. Up until Version 1912, performance on lower powered devices such as Thin Clients were problematic, but with the advances of CEF-based overlay, there are good signs of progress. 10ZiG quickly adapted to this recent release until compatibility and support was achieved and is demoing those good signs of progress on 10ZiG Linux-based Thin Clients, which did not take too long to accomplish.
Says 10ZiG CTO Kevin Greenway, “10ZiG is incredibly Citrix-responsive and Citrix-ready. Because we’re only consumed in Thin & Zero Client development, we were once again able to jump in and finetune Version 1912 advances through swift configuration and testing. We’re excited to be able to demonstrate this today and tomorrow at Citrix Summit, as we are publicly known as “first-responders” to Citrix updates. The enhanced BCR experience is just one more thing that our Thin Client Partners and customers are happy about and we know that they are anxious to see it in action. Stop by booth #502!”

It’s been an exciting 2019 in the world of Chromebooks, which comes to an end today. And about two weeks ago on a podcast, I shared what my Chromebook of the year is. But I put off writing about it, mainly because I was finding it difficult to explain why I chose what I did. After much reflection and quiet time during the holiday season, I figured it out.
But first, let me share my pick, which is certainly arguable: I think the best Chromebook for most people, and launched in 2019, is the Google Pixelbook Go.
Here are my reasons why:
Lighter and thinner than any similarly sized Chromebook.
Better design and materials than most Chromebooks
Speakers that are on par with, if not better than, those found in the Pixel Slate, which easily produce the best sound from any Chromebook.
Improved hush-keys that are now what I consider the gold standard of Chromebook keyboards.
Outstanding battery life in such a thin package
Yes, there are some “downgrades” from the Pixelbook when it comes to the Go. You lose the 2-in-1 form factor and stylus support as previously mentioned. The display resolution is lower and the screen aspect ratio is now 16:9. But in every other meaningful way, this is an upgrade from the Pixelbook and it comes at a lower cost.
Putting aside the reviews and my own personal opinion, what do actual customers who bought the Pixelbook Go think of it? Here’s how it fares from Best Buy reviewers for the $649 model:

New accelerated speeds with reduced latency and high security for remote workplace. Empowering remote locations is very important in todays environment of increased competition for specialized talent. And reduced IT budgets.
LAS VEGAS, Nov. 18, 2019 — Today at Autodesk University, HP Inc. announced HP ZCentral, a solution powering the next-gen of computing with the world’s first single sourced remote workstation solution. ZCentral centralizes high-end computer power in a single location, liberating power-users who work on graphics-intensive applications, and enabling remote, mobile and fluid workstyles. ZCentral combines Z by HP racked high performance workstations, a new generation ZCentral Remote Boost software – formerly known as Remote Graphics Software (RGS) – and new proprietary ZCentral Connect software to accelerate high compute workflows to the next level.
“As the office of the future continues to evolve, HP is equipping today’s mobile workforce with the world’s only single-source remote workstation solution, accelerating high-performance, complex workflows from any location,” said Jim Nottingham, general manager and global head of workstations, HP Inc. “HP ZCentral is reinventing the way businesses meet the demands of today’s global workforce with flexibility by accelerating IT deployment and management, reducing costs, and providing world-class data security.”
ZCentral equips IT departments with predictable and dedicated remote performance, independent of the end point device, and a simple way to manage those connections with ultimate data security. The financial impacts of a data breach can be significant to a company with the average cost of $3.6 million in 2018. ZCentral can reduce the challenges and costs associated with managing various platforms and devices while offering secure remote access to users. ZCentral offers 16%-33% higher performance, at 59%-72% of the cost of today’s virtualized workstations 2 . With ZCentral, IT managers can manage, monitor, and assign dedicated remote workstation performance on a secure private network with one console.
HP will deliver the full end-to-end ZCentral solutions to partners across various industries, including AEC, Data Science, Media and Entertainment, and Oil and Gas, among others. The updated ZCentral Remote Boost and new ZCentral Connect software will be available in early 2020, with beta versions available for current customers.
Fluid IT Transforms Workflows for Power Users
In today’s remote office environments, creators, animators, researchers and product developers, among other professionals, are working in various locations more frequently to increase collaboration, creativity, productivity and efficiency. However, power users accessing large files for these complex workflows, while syncing over the network, is costly and time-intensive. HP is innovating in two key areas to deliver enterprise-ready remote computing solutions in the right way: predictable and dedicated remote workstation performance independent of the OS (MacOS, Windows, Linux) and the shift to ultra-flexible IT.
ZCentral delivers dedicated performance via a secure and stable remote workstation connection, with the new ZCentral Remote Boost software delivering high-performance on VFX, simulation and 3D, bringing a new way to manage those connections collectively. ZCentral Remote Boost works with Windows, Linux or MacOS devices, providing flexibility for the end-user to create or design on almost any end-point device, anywhere.
The ZCentral Connect software enables company IT departments to easily assign workstations, monitor connections and logins all through one simple interface. ZCentral Connect also makes is simple and easy for power users to connect to dedicated, centralized compute or access the next available workstation within an assigned pool of centralized workstations. By keeping the workstation secure and centralized next to the data storage, with the ZCentral Connect and ZCentral Remote Boost connection, only encrypted pixels are sent over the network, so company data remains highly secure at the source.
With the world’s most secure workstations, packed with professional graphics highly tuned to deliver ultimate performance with complex, multi-application workflows, ZCentral is innovating how compute power is managed. ZCentral delivers:
• Efficiency gains with fast load times for large projects in remote locations (co-located data and compute for security and faster load times), protecting company data on the world’s most secure workstations – racked Z by HP workstations.
• IT departments can share a pool of workstations to each user in a new flexible way by managing connections remotely on one simple interface with ZCentral Connect Software Power users can tap into Z Workstation performance and work as if they are local even with a thin and light device via ZCentral Remote Boost Software
IT departments can equip workforces with a variety of end-point devices from Thin Clients to Notebooks and Convertibles and regardless of the device, power users can upgrade to dedicated workstation performance for the ISV applications they use, when they need them.

Editors Note: Fellow grew up on SCO and amber terminals, and Wordperfect. I remember those days as I had one of those terminals. Days I talked about the “elegant file system” of inodes. I grew up on on an XT with an IRMA card working 3270 Mapics. Oh, and DEC220s and Decnet. My intro to real email in 92. Much different today. I just gave my HP Chromebook to my wife to take to the mountains so she could watch Downton Abby at the condo over WiFi. I’m pretty particular about my browser these days as well (Brave as a rule). Looking forward to the next Gnome desktop release in October.
It takes all kinds and I enjoy multiple viewpoints.
Excerpt
Even in traditionally friendly territories, thin client hardware is beginning to be trumped by thin client apps, like Citrix Receiver and VMware View Client. That’s partially because the apps are practically free and can be installed on smartphones and other “thin” devices that are more portable (and more useful) than a static workstation that costs nearly as much as a new desktop. This plays into the whole “bring your own device” approach now being embraced by budget-conscious businesses that might have otherwise opted for thin clients in the past.
The HP Passport seems to be an aberration in all of this. It’s either a thin client for Web-based computing or Web TV for the office. IDG News’ Agam Shah reports that HP spokesman Jim Christiensen explained the Passport as a device intended for Internet cafés, libraries, or schools. “This is the first generation, we’ll see how it does.”
Considering that the Passport doesn’t have the lock-downs on it that those sorts of places want even from thin clients—controlling the length of user sessions or network access to printers, for example—I suspect it won’t do terribly well.

Seasoned Thin Client industry veteran, Rich Severson, joins Stratodesk’s team as part of its explosive growth.
Rich Severson is the latest addition to our Sales and Engineering team. As a Senior Solutions Engineer, he will play a key role in driving Stratodesk’s continued global growth. This includes expanding core business and our growing workspace IoT offering.
This is not the first time that Rich has played a pivotal part in transforming the future of a company. In his previous role at NComputing, he helped the Thin Client manufacturing leader and Stratodesk partner become the globally recognized brand that it is today.
It is precisely this experience and expertise in growing Solutions Engineering and Channel Enablement programs that will be so vital in aiding the Stratodesk endpoint revolution.
“Stratodesk is on a ramp up of tremendous growth” says Rich Severson. “This is an opportunity to join a great team and help them expand their global footprint. I look forward to the challenge of helping, partners, channel and OEM integrate Stratodesk solutions for endpoint and enterprise management.”
Rich has been a member of the server based and end user computing industry for more than twenty years. Outside of work, he spends most of his time with his family enjoying the benefits of the exciting music scene in Nashville, TN.
A Pivotal Moment in Stratodesk’s History
Rich has joined at what is truly an exciting time for Stratodesk. As we continue to see unprecedented and sustained growth year over year, it becomes increasingly integral to the core of our business that we add fantastic talent to not only sustain growth, but to have an impact on continued development as well.
Stratodesk’s key business is, and has been for years, PC Repurposing and its flagship product, NoTouch Desktop, the endpoint OS and management solution for VDI, DaaS and IoT endpoints. While both these aspects of the business continue to grow and make new sales records, recent innovations coupled with increasingly complex business needs have driven Stratodesk to do what no other company in our space can.
That is to not only meet the demands of a brave new and technologically advanced work world, but to push it beyond the limits of what was thought possible. These innovations, like the Raspberry Pi based Thin Client powered by Stratodesk software, and our NoTouch IoT platform, have led us to develop a new core business strategy, unlocking new potential for even greater growth opportunities for us and solutions for our customers and partners.
Workspace IoT and the workspace hub
A center driver for this strategy rests in IoT. Billions of devices are expected to be connected to the Internet of Things, and Stratodesk software is the ideal solution for complex enterprise IoT use cases.
The Citrix Ready workspace hub is a prime example of Stratodesk software’s ability for disruption. It brings technological innovation in both VDI and IoT and marries them together into one, powerful solution.
“Imagine a world where everything is connected” says Stratodesk CEO, Emanuel Pirker, “Hospital staff, remote workers and employees simply walk into a room. Lights switch on, computers boot up, and are automatically logged into with all the apps and data workers need. This is already possible, thanks to NoTouch IoTand the Citrix Ready workspace hub.”
Indeed, NoTouch software has already begun to build an IoT ecosystem around itself, with notable additions to the family of products being the Citrix Ready workspace hub, ThinPrint’s ThinPrint Hub, the NVIDIA Jetson Nano, among others.
These products are not only theoretical solutions to IoT use cases – they have a proven, real world track records for going above and beyond what any other endpoint has been able to achieve in terms of cost, time savings, ease of management, and solving everyday business challenges.
New Partnerships Foster Growth
Not only are free trial downloads and product sales for Stratodesk software up, new partners have recently come on board, driving further innovation. These partners include LG and Liquidware, among others, widening the pool of supported and native NoTouch devices and bringing advanced monitoring analytics to NoTouch Center.
“Bringing Stratodesk onboard as a preferred LG software vendor further enhances the capabilities of our most advanced Thin Clients,” says Stephen Hu, head of commercial monitors, LG Business Solutions USA. “And we’re proud that Stratodesk was featuring LG’s All-In-One Thin Client in their Citrix Synergy booth this year.”
“This Integration completes the end-to-end visibility story for organizations that choose NoTouch-based clients and Stratusphere UX,” says Kevin Cooke, Product Director for Stratusphere Solutions at Liquidware. “Visibility to workspace consumption is important when looking to manage expectations and deliver the necessary user experience. We’re excited to bring these metrics and information to Stratodesk customers.”
Extended Reach, Workspace IoT and VMworld 2019
Stratodesk also recently announced our new team member in the UK, showing our commitment to providing the UK with tailored solutions to fit their VDI & DaaS deployments. Additional job opportunities are available within the US – for more on that visit the jobs page on Stratodesk’s website.
Lastly, you can see the world’s leading endpoint OS and management solution for VDI, DaaS and IoT on display at VMworld 2019 in late August.

The increase in big deals bringing in larger customers is a key reason behind the appointment of Brad Richards as IGEL’s first Chief Customer Officer.
At the Microsoft Inspire event where they are in attendance this week, IGEL announced extremely strong triple digit growth over the past year. They are also emphasizing that they are capitalizing on this surge with the addition of multiple net-new additions to the executive team to further drive growth, especially around the major public clouds.
“When I considered taking this job three years ago, people told me not to,” said Jed Ayres, who joined German-headquartered IGEL in the spring of 2016 as President and CEO of IGEL North America, and has since added the global CMO role as well. “I was told that IGEL is a German company that sells commodity hardware in a dying industry – VDI. But it’s software, it’s Linux, the German part has been a gift, and Microsoft and Amazon have brought new life to the category. Us being agnostic lets us take advantage of it all.”
Late last night, VMware announced it had acquired Desktone, a company that provides virtual desktops as a service, which (among other things) allows users on mobile platforms to access Windows apps from non-Windows devices.
At first glance, this is a little puzzling given that VMware already has its own technology for doing the same thing. Here’s what VMware is doing.
Both VMware and Desktone play in the virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) space. The idea is that instead of offering Windows apps in the traditional way — running locally on a user’s PC — a company will create a number of virtual Windows desktop configurations on a server, then offer them over the network to users as needed. This was originally positioned as a cost benefit: Instead of updating Windows images and apps on a bunch of individual PCs, VDI would let companies take care of updates in a central place. Users would simply see the updated desktop the next time they logged on. In theory, companies could also save on hardware by buying thin client terminals instead of PCs for each user, although they’d still have to pay Microsoft for a Windows license for each user.
Had it not been for its ability to drive a pair of 4K monitors or being powered by a Type-C connector, our take on the J50C would have been lukewarm. But we like what we are seeing, especially at this price and with Windows 10 Pro. A solid buy if you can ignore the botched system disk setup.

CIOReview Editorial Board and an esteemed panel of judges reviewed and selected 10ZiG Technology® as One of the 10 Most Promising Citrix Solution Providers of 2019.
LEICESTER, UK – Ongoing innovations and the increasing immensity of the Citrix Systems product suite and its partner network make it quite challenging to find service providers who can excel with related consultation, implementation, configuring, fine-tuning, and support. On a mission to find the best Citrix Solution providers, a panel of key CIOs, CEOs, CTOs, analysts, along with the CIOReview editorial board, put numerous companies to the test, selecting only the top ten best, including 10ZiG Technology.
When asked if the 10ZiG “more depth and meaning” business model has anything to do with its specializing and speed of service, Kevin Greenway, CTO of 10ZiG and CIOReview interviewee, had this to say, “Yes. We answer your calls, stay by your side, and serve as coach, advisor, and troubleshooter, right from the day you receive your demo device through to post-launch, and beyond.” During the testing phase, customers receive personalized one-on-one device installation support and Q&A sessions. This unique level of service and customization is rare in the endpoint industry and is attributed to the 10ZiG sole focus of Thin & Zero devices. “We provide a multitude of custom embedding options and hardware configurations to ensure that our devices are tailormade to fit seamlessly into our customers’ environments,” added Greenway.
The niche of client hardware devices for VDI with software to manage them enables 10ZiG to exceed in customer support, hardware sophistication, and integration. How quickly 10ZiG reacts when Citrix releases new product and platform updates and rollouts, for example. When the Citrix Workspace App was released, 10ZiG was quickly thereafter listed in Citrix Ready Marketplace as being the only provider to have verified endpoint devices for both the Citrix Workspace App for Linux and for Windows categories. Being first is common with 10ZiG, with the ability to react more quickly compared to larger enterprises that often try to do everything, but not very well.
10ZiG is also embracing “full solution” adaptations in the end-user computing market and the shift toward digital workspaces by bringing further enhancements to its Zero Client products that were traditionally used in desktop virtualization/VDI environments. IGEL today announced that Falkirk Council has implemented virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) to provide workplace flexibility and mobility for over 2,000 staff and to enable it to assess and rationalise its whole office estate to make better use of its building assets.
Falkirk Council Introduces VDI and IGEL to Deliver Workplace Flexibility and Mobility for Over 2,000 Staff
…£250,000 per annum saved as a rolling desktop PC replacement programme isn’t required…
Reading, UK. March 27, 2019 – IGEL, a world leader in software-defined endpoint optimisation and control solutions for the secure enterprise, today announced that Falkirk Council has implemented virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) to provide workplace flexibility and mobility for over 2,000 staff and to enable it to assess and rationalise its whole office estate to make better use of its building assets.
In addition, VDI is allowing the Council to meet its Public Service Network (PSN)[1] compliance obligations and shift away from a continuous desktop replacement programme, which was costing around £250,000 every year.
Located in central Scotland within half an hour of Glasgow and Edinburgh, Falkirk Council provides a diverse and wide range of services to over 160,000 residents including bin collection, education, home care, planning application services, social housing, fostering and adoption services and roads maintenance. The council serves the largest towns in the area such as Falkirk, Bo’ness, Denny, Larbert, Stenhousemuir and Grangemouth – Scotland’s premier port and home to its only major oil refinery.
Falkirk Council has deployed Citrix Workspace as its VDI, mobile device and application management solution, along with 600 IGEL multimedia UD3 and 100 powerful quad core UD6 endpoints in addition to 1,000 IGEL Universal Desktop Convertor (UDC) software licences. Supplied by I-KONIC, an IT solutions provider and IGEL partner based in Glasgow, this has put in place a flexible, easy-to-manage and cost-effective solution to support the future development of the organisation.
Tommy Evans, Falkirk Council’s project lead for mobile and flexible working, explains, “Although it might sound cliché, moving from traditional PCs to thin client technology has genuinely been a paradigm shift for us. Along with mobile devices and iPads, staff aren’t now tied to a particular desk. They just login from any IGELdevice and are presented with Microsoft Office and applications tailored to their specific job role. We’re trying to change the mindset of employees to make work an activity, not just somewhere you go from 9-5. We’re empowering our staff to work anytime anywhere, even from home so they benefit from a good work-life balance.”
This is a huge cultural change for the Council and is allowing it to introduce flexible and remote working whilst ensuring availability of services to residents. Evans adds, “Even if there’s a snowstorm and people can’t get to an office, they can still login in and work as normal. VDI is also allowing us to review the buildings we currently have and exit old properties to lower our operational expenditure – helping towards making savings, which we hope will contribute to the approximately £60 million worth of savings which have to be made by 2023.”

Re-using existing IT infrastructure ‘sweats’ assets longer and saves precious budget
After a series of proof of concept tests with all well-known thin client vendors, IGEL was selected. This was for a variety of reasons:
IGEL was the only supplier offering a software approach to managing desktops as opposed to just selling hardware. IGEL’s UDC software was particularly attractive as it has allowed Falkirk Council to turn its existing Windows-based HP PC desktops into IGEL Linux endpoints to not only facilitate easy management, but to also extend the life of the hardware. Clearly this saves a huge amount of money given the hundreds of PCs involved.
IGEL’s Universal Management Suite (UMS) means that the whole UD3, UD6 and UDC environment can be centrally managed with IT staff able to shadow desktops to offer fast helpdesk support.
Compared to PCs, the IGEL UD3 and UD6 endpoints are quiet, produce less heat and are energy efficient. They come with an auto shut down feature too and turn off when not in use.
Security has been maximised. The IGEL endpoints are controlled by the UMS with the IGEL Linux OS ‘read only’. This means staff themselves cannot make changes to the endpoints locally or introduce security vulnerabilities as the desktop environment is ‘locked down.’
VDI simplifies desktop management across multiple locations
The use of Citrix Workspace means that the challenges and overhead of managing thousands of PCs across various buildings has been removed. Software updates are easily made as data and applications are all held centrally such that IT staff don’t have to traipse around machines updating things individually. Changes made in the datacenter automatically populate the connected IGEL desktops. This is key as PSN compliance requires councils to carefully manage the release dates of all key applications in use, such as Microsoft Office, and only be two versions behind the latest.
In addition, startup is now super-fast and takes seconds rather than minutes as was the case when PCs were used. Clearly this boosts staff productivity and avoids people wasting time as they wait for their desktops to ‘boot up.’
Furthermore, hardware maintenance has been drastically simplified as IGEL devices have no moving parts such as hard drives and fans.
The Citrix Workspace solution is powered by HPE server infrastructure. The Citrix control layer is hosted on two HiveIO hyperconverged clusters for availability, each consisting of four HP ProLiant DL360 servers with the Citrix XenServer hypervisor. All virtual desktop workloads run from HPE Enterprise Moonshot System which is populated with 90 server cartridges across two chassis to deliver optimised performance. In total the council has invested around £1.8 million to completely transition away from PCs and put in place a much more modern, flexible and easy to manage desktop solution which – in the long term – is more cost effective.
Sean Russell, I-KONIC’s managing director, says, “As a Scottish-based IGEL partner and Citrix Gold Solution Advisor, it’s tremendously exciting to support Falkirk Council as they embrace virtual desktop and workspace technologies to boost efficiency and increase productivity. Our longstanding partnership with Falkirk Council, IGEL and Citrix goes from strength to strength with this transformation project. The never-ending rolling replacement of PCs has become a thing of the past, and users are able to access their applications and information from virtually anywhere.”
Moving forward, Falkirk Council is reviewing its office requirements. Evans concludes, “One thing that is particularly pleasing about the project is how the council has used technology to save money whilst giving staff tools to work more efficiently and effectively. We’re looking very carefully now at how we can release building assets through the use of Citrix and IGEL.”
Andrew Gee, IGEL’s VP Sales Northern Europe, says, “With all UK councils hit by budgets cuts, UDC is a smart way for them to save money and extend the life of any x86-based PC or laptop by converting them into an IGEL endpoint. It avoids perfectly good technology being thrown away. And it’s quick and simple to do with almost any device and then easy to manage using our UMS software.”
IGEL is the world leader in providing software-defined endpoint optimization and control solutions for cloud and virtualized workspaces. The company’s world-leading software products include the IGEL OS™, IGEL UD Pocket™ (UDP) and Universal Management Suite™ (UMS). These solutions comprise a more secure, manageable and cost-effective endpoint management and control platform across nearly any x86 device. Organizations today looking at secure and efficient access to VDI environments both from on-prem as well as from mobile clients may be looking at a mixture of solutions and hardware devices that can solve the needs of VDI connectivity across the board. This can lead to a mix of solutions and management challenges. Lifecycle management of end user workstations is certainly one of the challenges faced by organizations with the tremendous capital outlay required to rotate out end user workstations. Workstations are replaced for a number of reasons including end of support contracts or a performance profile that is no longer adequate to power current end user applications. Businesses today may be looking at VDI initiatives where they may look to replace end user workstations with thin client devices. Businesses who already have VDI infrastructure or who are looking to make the transition also need to consider mobile connectivity to backend VDI systems. How can existing laptop devices be effectively utilized securely and efficiently as thin client devices?
What if organizations had a single solution that allowed provisioning mobile thin clients quickly and easily from existing laptops, greatly extended the life of end user workstations, improved the performance and security profiles, and negated the need to completely replace end user workstations for connecting to VDI infrastructure? This may sound too good to be true, however, this is just what Praim’s ThinOX4PC product allows businesses to accomplish with a single solution. Let’s take a closer look into Praim ThinOX4PC and how it allows organizations to accomplish thin client initiatives both in desktop/PC form as well as mobile thin clients.
What is Praim ThinOX4PC?
ThinOX4PC is the Praim software solution that is designed from the ground up to extend the life of your PC and transform it into a powerful and secure thin client solution. Additionally, powerful mobile thin client devices can be provisioned with existing laptop devices quickly and easily. ThinOX4PC enables doing this by installing the Linux-based operating system on the client or by booting the client with the “Live” version of ThinOX4PC. This enables organizations to have a fully functioning thin client device, either stationary or mobile, that is able to extend hardware service life as well as transition over to a VDI environment to support organizations migration plans as well as mobile workforce.
The ThinOX4PC software is supported on a wide range of hardware including:
Certified hardware
ThinOX4PC (and also the Live version) will support x86 processor type (not ARM).
Certified Ethernet Adapter:
Intel
Realtek
Broadcom
Qualcomm
Certified Graphics Card:
AMD
Intel NVIDIA GEFORCE 210. The VID:PID of the card should be 10de:0a65.
VESA (is used as generic driver if the video card is not recognized)
Certified WiFi Adapter:
Intel AC3160
Intel N2200
Unex DNXA-116
Certified disks type:
EIDE
SATA
The hardware above is tested by Praim. Nevertheless, ThinOX4PC supports a much wider range of hardware. If anyone tested Praim software and it wasn’t compatible with their hardware, they are kindly asked to contact Praim.
Quickly and Easily Provision Mobile Laptop Thin Clients
Praim ThinOX4PC not only allows businesses to satisfy desktop/PC thin client use cases, it also allows for quickly and easily provisioning mobile thin clients by making use of existing laptop infrastructure. The same installable or live boot environment can be used with laptops to turn these into powerful mobile thin clients. ThinOX4PC can be installed directly on the laptop hard drive if needed. However, the “Live” boot environment used in conjunction with a laptop device can allow a laptop to serve the dual purpose of both mobile Windows or Linux platforms as well as a secure and efficient way to safely access VDI environments. Once an end user completes any VDI connectivity reliant work processes, the live boot USB device can be removed and the laptop can be booted normally into the existing locally installed Windows or Linux instance.
Additionally, ThinOX4PC allows organizations to make use of virtually any laptop vendor or configuration and not be relegated to a specific hardware vendor to provide secure, uniform VDI access. This allows organizations to have a very cost-effective option for filling this very real business need of secure, mobile access to backend VDI environments all without the need to purchase new hardware.
ThinOX4PC a Cost-Effective Solution for Thin Clients
One of the tremendous challenges to organizations moving client access to VDI environments is the large capital expense that may be budgeted for refreshing end user client devices. Many organizations may think they need to get rid of “fat client” workstations running Windows client operating systems. However, organizations can use ThinOX4PC and keep existing workstations without the need for replacing existing hardware with new thin clients. While cheaper than a full blown physical workstation, thin client devices can be considerably expensive. It is a hard expense to swallow for organizations to get rid of existing hardware that may still be powerful and purchase new thin client devices when existing hardware can be utilized to make the connection to the backend VDI environment. With a much cheaper ThinOX4PC license, organizations can simply reuse existing hardware, extending the life of their investment and still allow connecting to next generation VDI infrastructure.
Utilizing ThinOX4PC allows organizations a powerful management solution when utilized with Praim ThinMan Server. ThinMan brings configuration management, automation, and an overall “single pane of glass” management platform for all end user clients. This allows organizations to have a streamlined management tool they otherwise would not have with a workstation or PC environment. The return on the hardware investment is much greater with ThinOX4PC and ThinMan server.
Installing or Running Praim ThinOX4PC
As mentioned earlier, there are a couple of ways that ThinOX4PC can be utilized on a workstation/PC. The thin client software can either be installed which means the contents of the existing hard drive will be erased. Alternatively, ThinOX4PC can be ran in the “Live” mode, which means the software is simply booted from a USB key and loaded in memory that way. The existing contents of hard drive will not be overwritten using this method. This essentially makes the PC serve either purpose. With a quick boo off the USB key, the PC becomes a powerful thin client. Eject the USB key and reboot, and the workstation boots from the existing Windows installation.
You can download a trial version of the ThinOX4PC software from the Praim website. It is extremely easy to get the Live USB key created which allows either installing the thin client software or booting the live environment.
Cloud computing is a booming industry and is likely to continue growing as faster data speeds such as the fifth-generation of wireless technology (5G) allow companies to move more of their computing power to the cloud. It’s clear that the cloud is dominated by two big companies: Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) and Microsoft Corp. (MSFT). What’s less clear is the status of another technology giant: Alphabet (GOOGL). Many estimate it to be a distant third. Each of these companies has seen their total revenue soar in recent years.
Here’s a detailed look at the cloud strategies and growth outlook for these three companies.
Amazon Web Services, known as AWS, had the fastest growth in 2018, with total sales jumping almost 50% to approximately $26 billion. Meanwhile, Microsoft and its Intelligent Cloud unit saw its revenue rise by 18% to $32.2 billion. Alphabet, on the other hand, does not publicly disclose its cloud revenue. However, the company did give investors a hint during its January 2018 conference call that its cloud business was a billion-dollar-per-quarter business.

Despite the popularity and longevity of Citrix, the application can be very challenging to troubleshoot because the environment can be complex. As an example, a WOW is typically connected over Wi-Fi, and when Citrix isn’t working, it’s difficult to distinguish between network and application issues. Once a problem been identified, how does one then understand which specific Citrix apps are performing poorly? Another task that’s difficult with legacy tools is getting alerted if the performance of critical applications hosted on Citrix is poor.
These were some of the problems Northeast Georgia Health Systems (NGHS) was experiencing with its Citrix implementation. NGHS is a large health-care facility with about 15,000 employees in three hospitals, each with its own Citrix environment powered by about 350 servers to deliver services to approximately 5,000 Citrix XenDesktops. Citrix XenApps is also used to provide applications to about 80 remote and specialty sites where workers can use a laptop, thin client, desktop or a local WOW.
Kristien Kramer, an NGHS network engineer and team lead, agreed to be interviewed about the problems they were facing and how Nyansa’s AI-infused Voyance IT management platform helped overcome them. He told eWEEK one of the factors that has added to the complexity of the environment is its process of migrating to wireless. Historically, most of the devices were connected via a wired connection, but now they are about 70/30 wired and wireless.

IGEL, a world leader in software-defined endpoint optimisation and control solutions for the secure enterprise, today launched the IGEL Workspace Edition. Powered by the IGEL OS 11 operating system, the IGEL Workspace Edition demonstrates, once again, that IGEL is leading the industry in its software-first approach and ability to standardise, manage and secure any complex end user computing ecosystem.
IGEL Revolutionises Cloud Workspace Endpoint Management with IGEL OS 11
Flexible software licensing options de-couple the hardware from the software, making it easier and more cost-effective than ever to sell, manage, and support IGEL’s software-defined endpoint solutions
Reading, UK. Jan. 24, 2019 – IGEL, a world leader in software-defined endpoint optimisation and control solutions for the secure enterprise, today launched the IGEL Workspace Edition. Powered by the IGEL OS 11 operating system, the IGEL Workspace Edition demonstrates, once again, that IGEL is leading the industry in its software-first approach and ability to standardise, manage and secure any complex end user computing ecosystem. Being unveiled today at the 2019 IGEL DISRUPT End User Computing Forum event in Munich, Germany, the IGEL Workspace de-couples the hardware from the software through new, flexible and transferable software licensing options that are designed to increase the value of endpoints while simplifying their acquisition, control and management.
“With the launch of the IGEL Workspace, we’ve made endpoint management and control even easier and more cost-effective than ever before,” said Simon Townsend, IGEL Chief Marketing Officer for EMEA. “First, we revolutionised endpoint management, bringing simplicity and uniformity to complex VDI ecosystems. Now we’re revolutionising endpoint acquisition, ownership, and support, a move that we believe is going to be very exciting for both our partners and customers, and one that will make a tremendous impact on their ability to secure, optimise and control the endpoint.”
Shifting Priorities Prompt Need to Redefine Endpoint Acquisition and Ownership
IGEL is the only full-offering software-defined endpoint management solution that supports the assignment and transfer of licences to any compatible x86 machine, regardless of manufacturer. By separating the software licence from hardware and pricing, IGEL is maximising flexibility for its partners and customers by making it easier to acquire and manage a diverse range of endpoints.
“We’ve always been a software-first company,” continued Townsend. “Now with the upswing in user mobility, BYOD, IoT and desktop-as-a-service (DaaS), endpoint devices are proliferating and IT is moving toward software-defined, cloud, and ‘pay as you go’ subscription and consumption licences. Subscription-based is the modern way by which organisations buy software.”
New Features Make Endpoints Simpler to Manage, Easier to Sell
With the IGEL Workspace, partners and customers will benefit from several features in the IGEL OS 11 that make endpoints simpler to manage. These include:
New, modern product structure simplifies endpoint acquisition, provides customers with more choice and flexibility, and offers greater value for the investment.
New cloud-based software licensing makes it easy for customers to manage all their endpoint licences, with complete insight.
Licence roaming supports the migration of software licences between any compatible x86 devices for greater flexibility and even more hardware cost containment
New support offerings fit the needs of any enterprise and complements the new product structure to give customers complete confidence in their end user computing environment.
New and modern IGEL OS device interface during boot up and for those who log directly into an IGEL OS 11 powered device.
Expanded partner ecosystem, now 80+ partners strong and growing, helps ensure effective IGEL-driven solutions support a vast range of IT and user environments.
Additionally, with the IGEL Workspace, partner organisations will receive transferable licensing and bundled value-added features that make it easier to sell. “Our new subscription licensing model complements the existing perpetual licensing model that our partners and customers are used to. This will also drive more transactions to naturally cultivate recurring relationships with their customers,” said Simon Richards, Chief Sales Officer, IGEL.
Unique Licencing Model Drives Flexibility; Minimises Expenses
IGEL’s software-first approach makes it easy for IT organisations to acquire and manage endpoints, regardless of whether they have 10 or 10,000 users. With the IGEL Workspace, partners and customers can transfer both the perpetual and the subscription upgrade licensing to any new or existing x86 device.
“What was once very easy to operate and manage is now also very simple to purchase and own, while providing even greater value to our customers,” continued Richards. “Not only are we minimising hardware expenses for our customers and partners by providing them with the industry’s most powerful and most intuitive endpoint management platform, they can also enjoy the peace of mind of knowing that they will get constant updates from 80+ integrated technology partners. Ultimately, this enables them to maintain full-featured functionality with the broadest array of endpoint ecosystem partner offerings.”
With the IGEL Workspace, customers can also install or transfer both the perpetual licence and the subscription option. Some of the new features specific to IGEL OS 11 include a switching feature and profile support for IGEL Universal Desktop, IGEL UD Pocket and the IGEL UDC using the same firmware across all devices; enhanced display switching feature that supports complex configurations with more than two screens; and, auto-DPI for 4K displays.
The Enterprise Management Pack software subscription includes the IGEL Cloud Gateway (ICG) and other value-added capabilities. A suite of new enterprise class support offerings complements the new product capabilities. Select, Priority, and Priority Plus support packages provide a good-better-best approach to support from which customers can choose the support package that works best for them. The base Select support is included with software maintenance.
