In the world of information technology, “cloud” has become jargon that is reminiscent of the word “plastics” in the iconic 1967 film, The Graduate. The “cloud” will solve all our problems, faster, cheaper, and more reliably. In reality, cloud is a heterogeneous concept and although it has promise we need to be careful not to oversell its capabilities. There are many variations in architecture, capabilities, and security. Companies are increasingly marketing the cloud and its benefits, which is to be expected, but I’m concerned that my CIO peers are falling captive to the promise without scrutinizing each iteration of “cloud” they are being sold on…and there are many.
