Vendor Case Study – Security for Virtualized Environment & Citrix Xen

Virtualization provides organizations with many costs savings and significant business agility. Among the most effi cient datacenter operators are service providers, such as Cloud Service Providers (also known as infrastructure-as-a-service) and application-as-a-service providers.
Within traditional businesses, virtualization is powering a shift toward IT as a service. As an organization increases the level of virtualization and takes steps toward creating an internal (private) cloud, operating margins become a primary
focus of IT departments. Similarly, cost and operational effi ciency represent the primary driver for leveraging external
(public) clouds.
Many organizations use the Xen hypervisor, while service providers often use Linux operating systems as they provide attractive cost models and operational fl exibility. These organizations excel at increasing operational effi ciency through innovative use of virtualization since datacenters are not part of the business, but rather, datacenters are the business.
When creating a highly virtualized datacenter, organizations normally consider the impact on hardware, networking, storage, back-up, and so on. However, they must also consider the impact of endpoint security on the success of their cloud infrastructure projects.
This solution brief describes the often unanticipated impact of endpoint security on operating margins, which must be considered as organizations push virtualization usage toward cloud.
Virtualization security challenges
It is a well-known fact that antivirus software is quite simply a requirement today. Applications and operating systems running in physical, virtual or cloud-based environments are all susceptible to exploitation. Although traditional security
can be used in virtualized environments, it is neither built nor optimized for this type of infrastructures.
Using traditional antivirus solutions can result in specifi c challenges in a cloud environment such as:
● Low virtual machine consolidation ratios
● Boot latency
● AV storms
● Outdated AV on dormant virtual machines
● Administrative bottlenecks

Vendor Case Study Healthcare – McKesson & Citrix XenApp

Equipped with ExtraHop, the McKesson application hosting team found that failed  DNS record lookups were adding significant latency to Citrix launch and load times.

Each failed DNS record lookup took approximately five seconds to resolve, and some application launches triggered more than five of these lookups. By removing bad records, McKesson saw average application launch times drop from 40 seconds to 12 seconds—nearly 75 percent faster.

BENEFITS
• 90% reduction in mean-time-to-resolution (MTTR)
• 75% improvement in Citrix launch and load times
• Avoidance of SLA penalties
• More than $660,000 in annual cost savings
• Retirement of legacy infrastructure monitoring tools

Is Anyone Really ‘HIPAA Compliant’ In Healthcare?

The short answer is yes ‒ many health related organizations adhere faithfully to both the letter and spirit of the healthcare legislation known as HIPAA. The Case for Cloud POS

It wasn’t all that long ago that when someone mentioned “the cloud” as an option for Point-of-Sale (POS) systems, those in the know would scoff and say, “It’s just not possible.” And quite frankly, the initial deployments of cloud POS systems were not very good. Yet with new iterations of […]

Source: www.ihlservices.com

Make no mistake, it is not for every retailer size and shape. But new hybrid deployments, together with the adoption by larger retailers, are making the potential use of the cloud for POS a worthy discussion. This is something most retailers would not even have considered 2 years ago.

Thin is in and desktops on diets, say Insurance industry IT Managers

UK Insurance industry IT managers plan to put their desktops on diets over the next 24 months as research shows thin and zero client adoption looks set to rise from 20% to 39%. The managers say increased flexibility, security and speed of deployment are the primary benefits of thin client.

Currently 78% of the Insurance companies surveyed run a centralized IT infrastructure, with 80% of organizations using some thin or zero client desktops. The average number of desktops that are thin or zero clients is 20%, with PC’s still dominating at 42%. 23% of users are also using notebooks and 19% tablets. But moving forward, IT managers believe that thin clients will be on 39% of desktops within the next two years as companies focus on the benefits of flexibility (56%), improved security (46%) and speed of deployment (44%). However, although thin and zero client use is set to almost double there are still mental obstacles to further implementation. The three top concerns with thin client deployment are: user dissatisfaction when the system goes down (42%), implementation costs (40%) and employee adoption (40%).

With almost all those surveyed (94%) saying an increase in the number of thin and zero clients on their desktops was likely or very likely, a third (32%) also confirmed that this increase could very likely in part come from converting existing hardware into centrally managed thin client-like devices.

The research, conducted by Dynamic Markets on a sample of 50 UK Insurance companies on behalf of IGEL Technology, also found little favoritism among the server-based computing providers with Citrix, VMware and Microsoft software all present in roughly half of all organizations with thin clients.

The recently published update of IGEL Linux builds Bremer Thin and Zero Client specialist functional breadth of its operating system even further. Because from the latest version 5.04.100 firmware supports theMicrosoft Remote Desktop Gateway (RD Gateway). Thus, it is now possible to connect to Linux-based IGEL thin clients (x86) directly over the Internet using the RDP environment behind an RD Gateway. The advantage: A VPN tunnel is no longer required in this scenario. And also from a safety viewpoint, convinces the feature. The connection itself runs over HTTPS, which enables administrators to control the traffic on upstream firewalls and lead to the target further.

For users has thus a safe and easy way to enable, for example, employees in remote offices access to the virtual infrastructure at headquarters. Regardless of whether they are to Terminal Services, virtual desktops (VDI) or workstations is.

Privacy filters – a Primer

Privacy filters, sometimes also known as light control film (LCF) such the 3M Vikuiti A-LCF and Optical Filters K-LCF consist of many thin louvers that function like a vertical window blind restricting the path of light through the filter. The display is clear and un-distorted to the user directly within the viewing axis, but to either side the image is blackened and un-readable.

There are a number of applications for displays where privacy for the viewer is required such as an outdoor privacy screen in an ATM, medical kiosk, in-flight entertainment screens and polling booths. Other applications are for contrast enhancement and light control such as pedestrian crossing units and head down avionics where the re-directed light limits the near field canopy reflections.

Privacy filters are offered either as standard plain or non-glare matte hard coated polycarbonate filters typically 0.5mm (0.021″) thick precision cut to final size, laminated into glass or plastic for thickness and extra ruggedisation, or integrated with a touch screen. Lamination with glass or plastic adds the options to have anti-reflection and anti-finger print coatings, chemically toughened glass and EMI shielding.

3M Vikuiti A-LCF is the established product replacing previous LCF-P and AG-LCF variations. Its continuous micro-replicated black embedded louvers is very high quality, but expensive:

Description 3M Vikuiti Advanced light control film
Louver angle sheets are 0° ±2°, typical bias to avoid display source interference +5° minimum
View angle 60° ±4° (30° either side of center)
Maximum sheet size 431.8 x 431.8mm (17 x 17″)
Thickness of film 0.53mm (0.021″)
Other thickness supplied by optical index match lamination
Finish Standard gloss (ABR0) or matt non-glare hard coating (ABR2)
Transmittance 70%
Operating Temperature -40 to +75°C (limitations of the lamination)

The K-LCF is a high value alternative to the 3M product. The privacy control is the same and the filters construction is similar to previous LCF-P types.

Description Optical Filters K-LCF
Louver angle + 15° ±3° standard bias to avoid display source interference +5° minimum
View angle 60° ±4° (30° either side of center)
Stock sheet size 17″ diagonal 270 x 340mm (louver parallel +15° to the 270mm side)
Larger sizes up to 1200 x 760mm (47 x 30″) to special order
Thickness of film 0.53mm (0.021″)
Other thickness supplied by optical index match lamination
Finish Standard plain or matt non-glare
Transmittance 75%
Operating Temperature -40 to +75°C (limitations of the lamination)

Alternative technologies

Blur film technology dispersed the incident light at particular angles and transmitting it at all other angles. The appearance therefore, changes from translucent to transparent depending on the angle from which it is viewed. This method was less effective when the distance of the filter to the display source was reduced and never become widely adopted. Production ended several years ago and it is no-longer available

CEE Thin-Client Market Forecast Revised Downward for 2014, in Spite of Impressive Q2 Growth in EMEA

The Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) thin-client market posted double-digit growth in Q2 2014 for the second quarter in a row

Source: www.idc.com

Thin-client shipments in EMEA increased by 15.3% year on year in Q2 2014, which corresponded to about 476,500 units. Shipment value also went up, by 22.2% year on year, to reach $169.65 million. Value has been growing faster than volume for the past six consecutive quarters, reflecting both stronger demand for more powerful hardware and an increasing demand for all-in-one (AIO) thin clients. The latter accounted for 4.5% volume share of total thin-client shipments in the region.

“It is worth noting that the influence of the migration from expired Windows XP, as a market driver for PC and thin-client renewals, will weaken by the end of 2014. As a result, thin-client growth will ease off as well,” says Oleg Sidorkin, senior research analyst at IDC. “In H1 2015, EMEA thin-client shipments could post a marginal decline, unless economic growth across Europe stabilizes sufficiently to become a strong market driver.”

WatchGuard Technologies’ New Policy Map Provides ‘X-Ray’ Vision into Firewall Configurations and Network Traffic

Newest enhancement to WatchGuard Dimension visibility solution allows admins to see policy misconfigurations and optimise traffic

9 September 2014 – WatchGuard® Technologies has announced the industry’s first interactive, integrated policy mapping capability for Unified Threat Management (UTM) and Next-Generation Firewall (NGFW) appliances. Available in the latest version of its real-time network security visibility solution, WatchGuard Dimension™, Policy Map provides a comprehensive view of traffic flow and policy impact across the entire network, with the ability to quickly filter or drill down for additional detail and analysis.

Security policies are central to firewall operation and according to a 2014 Verizon Report[1], there’s a strong correlation between a badly configured firewall and the likelihood of a security breach. Dimension Policy Map aggregates disparate information about policies, interfaces, applications and related traffic flows, and presents it in a simple, intuitive and interactive visualisation dashboard. It can be used for policy audit, to find active and misconfigured policies, identify unusual or abnormal traffic patterns, visually check if firewall policies or configuration changes have the intended impact on traffic patterns and much more.

“Security policies are the brains of a firewall and dictate the effectiveness of any firewall configuration and directly impact our customers’ network protection,” said Dave R. Taylor, vice president of corporate and product strategy at WatchGuard Technologies. “Given the tremendous customer uptake for Dimension on a global basis, we recognised an opportunity to improve their security management and help eliminate errors by giving network administrators a powerful tool for visualising policy analysis. They can now see policies like never before and instantly evaluate the impact on the network or user.”

Beyond Policy Map, the latest update to Dimension brings a variety of additional insightful reporting and new dashboard features that includes information on zero-day malware, details about website visits and traffic disposition, enhanced navigation, and consolidated CA certificate management. And it comes free on any WatchGuard UTM or NGFW platform.

IGEL Technology: Von der Green IT zum grünen Unternehmen

UD10__Energy_Star_web IGEL_Green_Company

The German thin client market leader writes climate protection and energy saving not only the product side quite large. With numerous internal projects IGEL is also working on its own life cycle and anchored the issue of climate change in corporate strategy.

Bremen September 9, 2014 – With its thin client solutions, IGEL offers an extremely energy-efficient alternative to the traditional desktop PC. So, for example, received the All-in-One Thin Client UD10 recently the Energy Star specification 6.0. Irrespective of the Bremen company sets but also to themselves an ambitious target and it has already made a decisive course: from the use of green energy, via the purchase of natural gas vehicles to the use of LED lighting. In an effort to reduce the environmental footprint consistently, now IGEL involved in the pilot project “green-transformation” as a model company. The goal: to protect the climate through the analysis of organizational structures and work processes are to be an organic part of the corporate culture. Climate-change agents to identify the various environmental aspects in the individual business areas and sensitize the IGEL staff for further joint processes of change.

Than previous milestones in climate protection IGEL can cite the company building built in 2009 at its headquarters in Bremen. It is built according to the valid regulations for energy saving and is supplied with green electricity. Beyond this, IGEL is 14001 (environmental management) according to ISO 9001 (quality management) and ISO. The living quality and environmental management is reviewed in annual audits by an independent certification body, thus improving constantly.

More action on climate change form the CO2 balance for the location Bremen according to GRI (Global Reporting Initiative), the switch to LED lighting in the warehouse and assembly as well as the equipment of the company fleet with environmentally friendly natural gas cars.

And the agenda for upcoming projects is well filled: Procurement management is to be more environmentally oriented, so that the CO2 emissions are further reduced during production, use and disposal of IGEL products. To better engage employees, also are plans for an idea management system and a “Climate Day”.

“To achieve climate protection goals in the company, it needs not only technical solutions,” commented Dr. Martin Schnatmeyer, Head of Quality, Environmental & Safety Management and Climate Change Agent at IGEL Technology. “It is important to involve all employees in the change processes. Through this involvement, many new ideas can arise also like to implement the colleagues voluntarily and with initiative. This now has the majority of overall IGEL hardware product range over the environmental quality mark.

BYOD is smothering my security!

Security teams are struggling to keep up with the demands of traditional and mobile security. Craft a bring-your-own-device strategy that relieves the pressure.

Many security pros have commented that MDM, which stands for “mobile device management,” should stand for “mobile data management,” because data safety and security is the biggest concern.

Unchecked, mobile users can easily obtain corporate data from the network and share it publicly using their own email, text, and other communications software. This may violate a company’s own data security policies, and threaten its ability to comply with federal and state regulations.

* Promotes long-term reduction of harmful bacteria, mold and fungi on surfaces

* Minimizes the presence of microbes on touch points that can serve as transfer routes for bacteria from surface-to-skin

* One application effectively fights the growth of bacteria, mold and fungi, non-stop on surfaces for up to 90 days

* Proactively and continually prevents odor, staining and deterioration caused by bacteria, fungi, mold and mildew

* Can be safely and easily applied without affecting day to day  operations

* Invisible, odorless and will not affect the appearance or performance of treated surfaces

* Since SurfaceAide XL does not leach, the organism cannot emerge as a new resistant microbe or “super bug”

SEEPOINT INFO

Protect self service kiosk users from dangerous bacteria like E coli and MRSA with SeePoint’s antibacterial coated kiosks. In kiosk installations where bacteria transmission is a concern, SeePoint’s trained technicians can apply this antibacterial coating, the Aegis Microbe Shield, to keep touch screens and keyboards free from bacteria, spores, viruses and fungi. Coated touch screens and keyboards also provide surfaces where bacteria and other microbial contaminants cannot grow.

Antibacterial coatings are highly recommended for kiosks used in hospitals, public areas, high traffic installations, government self services and retail display fixtures. In use since the mid-1970s, the Aegis Microbe Shield is a safe and effective antimicrobial technology that combats contamination on frequently touched surfaces such as kiosk keyboards and touch screens. The antibacterial coating used on SeePoint kiosks is a permanent protective shield that kills 99.4% of all microbes.

WHAT ARE MICROBES?
Bacteria
Algae
Fungi(Mold/Mildew)
WHERE ARE MICROBES?
In the air
In the soil
On our skin and bodies
On items we touch every day
WHAT ARE ANTIMICROBIALS?
Antimicrobials control, destroy or suppress the growth of microbes, eliminating or limiting the negative effects of contamination, staining and deterioration.

Permanently bonded to the touch screen surface, the resistive membrane of the antibacterial coating does not affect display clarity on the touch screen. The antibacterial coating is also safe for the user and the environment. The coating does not leach in the environment, migrate to a user’s hands or wear off when the screen is cleaned. Unlike other products, the technology of this coating does not allow microbes to adapt or create resistant organisms.

HOW DOES THE ANTIMICROBIAL USED BY SEEPOINT WORK?
The Aegis Microbe Shield works by physically rupturing the microbe. The compound used in the coating consists of a long molecular chain that looks like a sword which, at its base, has a permanent bonding property. The permanently bonded “sword” sticks up from the surface where it has been applied, ready to puncture the microbe. When the microbe comes into contact with the sword, the microbe is punctured. Then the sword’s base, which includes a nitrogen molecule, draws the microorganism to it and electrocutes the cell. The microbe is destroyed on the sword. In the process, the coating is not consumed or dissipated so the antimicrobial is not depleted.

KEY ATTRIBUTES OF THE AEGIS MICROBE SHIELD
Bonds directly and permanently to the surface on which it applied.
Remains in place and active even after multiple washings.
Can be applied to almost any surface material.
Does not migrate from the surface.
Does not transfer onto the skin.
Does not leach harmful toxins into the environment.
Is not poisonous.
Does not dissipate over time.
Physically controls the microbe on contact.
Is proven successful in demanding settings such as medical facilities and clean rooms where safety and effectiveness are paramount.
Does not create an environment for adaptive organisms and “super bugs.”
