The energy efficiency and sustainability have arrived in the middle class. However, the IT infrastructure can still make much greener. In addition to the virtualization and energy-saving thin and zero clients are on the rise.

Bremen March 10, 2015 – The Green IT has developed from a former hype for the Group’s corporate practice – even in the middle class. The local level and how it goes now, revealing a supported IGEL Technology Techconsult survey of 200 companies with 10 to 999 employees. The study found regarding the IT infrastructure that 51% of the companies surveyed locate the largest savings in the IT workplace. The popular Green IT initiative in this field is virtualization with 74 percent. Also on the rise are thin and zero clients. The slender access devices according to the survey 28 percent of SMEs surveyed in use.

That the demand for the slim devices in the SME sector continues, the study also shows: Around one third of the surveyed companies still use the no thin or zero clients, retain them for an alternative to the previously used conventional PCs. This statement implies that long thin clients are not just an issue for large corporations, but also win in SMEs steady influence.

The most important contribution to improving the environmental performance in terms of IT infrastructure provides, according to the companies surveyed virtualization with its consolidated action. Virtual environments of any kind, whether servers, desktop, or storage not only save electricity costs, they also make a great contribution in terms of the sustainable use of resources. Thus, it is not surprising that already use three out of four of the companies surveyed in the study virtual environments within their IT infrastructure. In addition to a large amount of server virtualization in the area of desktop virtualization with 35% still plenty of room for improvement above. The same applies to the use of thin and zero clients (28%) currently prädesdiniert due to their energy-saving operation without fans and hard drives for use in virtualized environments.

Broad portfolio makes the move to thin clients

The growing interest in thin clients met the German market leader IGEL with a wide range of hardware and software solutions that enable IT jobs interpret not only energy efficient, but also much easier to roll out and let manage. For data and applications only need to be centrally maintained and administered on the server. Thus, the high maintenance of software attributable to the individual desktop workstations. In addition, the included IGEL products IGEL Universal Management Suite (UMS) allows standardized remote administration of all settings and firmware components.

And even in the event that the nationwide transition to hardware thin clients can not be realized ad hoc, IGEL thin client software with the Universal Desktop Converter 2 (Udc2) an attractive and cost-effective alternative. The software is installed as the operating system on PCs or notebooks and makes the hardware used a powerful, universal thin client. So all PC-based devices can be standardized, including management and support. The desktop administration costs are reduced drastically and also from Green IT point of view, precisely this alternative because additional electrical is avoided and the life cycle of the client hardware is extended. The time schedule for hardware investments IT budgets can thus be saved or used otherwise.

Umfrage im Mittelstand: Thin Clients treiben Green IT weiter voran

IGEL | IGEL protects customer investment with its long-term Linux Thin Client OS updates

Reading UK. 9 March 2015 – IGEL has updated the firmware of its Linux thin client operating system with the latest software clients for Citrix XenApp / XenDesktop, VMware Horizon and Microsoft R

Source: www.realwire.com

IGEL’s customer focus and quality German engineering is the reason businesses continue to choose us,” said Simon Richards, IGEL’s UK & Ireland Managing Director. “For thin clients to keep pace with the latest developments in the data center, they need up-to-date software clients and protocol standards. The earlier the firmware becomes obsolete, the more often the hardware has to be replaced. These long-term firmware updates are yet another example of our commitment to provide customers with continued access to the best desktop technology available.”

The update for the IGEL Linux v4 operating system (Version 4.14.100) features the Citrix Receiver (Versions 12 and 13). Citrix Receiver 13.1.2 offers support for Citrix XenApp / XenDesktop 7.5 including Citrix StoreFront. The update also offers a range of new options such as straightforward and secure user authentication via smartcard and pass-through.

Additional management features
Various other client updates are included such as Version 3.2 of the VMware Horizon Client, IGEL’s own RDP Client including RemoteFX 8 for accessing Microsoft RemoteApp and Microsoft Remote Desktop. To make administration even easier, IGEL has also integrated a range of practical extra functions, for example the IGEL Quick Navigator that speeds up configuration procedures by referring directly to necessary and possible set-up settings.

“Customers buying IGEL thin clients back in 2009 would never have imagined the functionality that would become available with features such as Citrix Storefront and RemoteFX 8 and yet with these firmware updates, customers using these older IGEL thin clients can still take advantage of these features,” explained Simon.

The laptop has a 14-inch screen, 6-cell battery, available docking station, integrated smart card reader and Wi-Fi options – optimized for UK users.

Thin client and zero client end users access office productivity applications – such as email, word processing, spreadsheets and electronic presentations – that are hosted in data centers. Zero client PCs are differentiated by having no operating system, no local storage and don’t retain persistent data. Antivirus protection is not necessary. IT departments that implement zero client technology reduce maintenance and administrative complexity and realize a lower total cost of ownership.

Cirrus LT uses the Teradici PCoIP® protocol to ensure superior computing performance. PCoIP compresses, encrypts and encodes the computing experience at the data center and transmits only pixels across the network to the end user. PC users have secure, fully functional access to all applications. Cirrus LT takes advantage of the strongest security protocols, AES-256 cryptography and NSA Suite B ciphers.

Why Jonathan Bush thinks big vendors like Epic, Cerner will ‘collapse’

The healthcare cloud market in the US and Europe is expected to grow between 10% and 30% by 2020, and in the United States reach $3.5 billion by 2020, up from $903 million in 2013. And although security concerns remain, a HIMSS survey from June showed that hospital IT executives are steadily turning to cloud technology in an effort to lower maintenance costs while meeting expanding tech needs.

The current state of affairs won’t be sustainable for much longer, Bush believes. As independent physicians continue to shift towards hospital employment and the enterprise segment grows, the need for seamless acute care integration will become unavoidable. Bush describes it as being “hustled” into the acute care space.

GOOG and Android Pay vs. Apple Pay and AAPL in wake of Softcard purchase.

Android Pay, GOOG’s new payment API, takes on Apple Pay & AAPL. But what IS Android Pay, how does it threaten Apple, and where does Google Wallet fit in?

Source: investorplace.com

Last week, Google bought Softcard for an undisclosed sum. The biggest plus for GOOG? All three major carriers will pre-install Google Wallet on their Android devices. With google wallet all of the carriers had refused to play nice so this is a big change and should give AAPL fans some caution.

Fujitsu to Migrate All Internal Systems to a New Cloud Platform – Fujitsu Global

Fujitsu today announced that it will migrate all internal systems to a new cloud platform, underlining the benefits of cloud computing as a more efficient, flexible and cost-effective solution even for the largest global companies. It will consist of approximately 640 large-scale and complex systems across some 13,000 servers globally that encompass a mixture of legacy and cutting-edge systems. The transition will proceed in stages starting in February 2015 and is scheduled to be completed within five years with an expected reduction in total cost of ownership (TCO) of 35 billion yen.

Source: www.fujitsu.com

Fujitsu transitioning to OpenStack

This will be an all-encompassing upgrade that covers all of the Fujitsu Group’s internal systems worldwide, which will be migrated to a new cloud platform based on OpenStack software that is currently under development. This will be the first time that the Fujitsu Group is attempting to migrate all of its large-scale, complex systems, from legacy systems to cutting-edge systems.

  1. Number of systems: approx. 640 systems operating in the Fujitsu Group worldwide
Japan: approximately 450 systems (approx. 8,000 servers)
Outside Japan: approximately 190 systems (approx. 5,000 servers)
  2. Transition time frame: 5 years beginning February 2015
  3. TCO savings: 35 billion yen over five years

Among the systems that will be upgraded in this process is a global communications platform that was deigned to make work tasks more efficient for 170,000 employees across roughly 540 group companies. This global communications platform was deployed in phases beginning in April 2012, and has already accelerated business operations. In addition, by 2013, it had cut group-wide expenses related to system operations and business trips by 30% compared to 2010 levels. Moreover, the expertise that the company gained through its internal implementation was used as a reference model for proposing, building, and operating similar systems for customers, and now roughly 150 companies employing over one million people have deployed such systems.

PRESS RELEASE

Manchester, UK – For organisations looking to switch to a virtualised, cloud-computing environment, VXL’s new CloudDesktop™ PC repurposing software delivers a more viable solution to that of a legacy PC infrastructure.

Combined with the existing investment of a large PC infrastructure, VXL’s CloudDesktop™ represents an easy-to-deploy and low cost alternative featuring VXL’s latest Gio Linux based operating system.

By extending the life of legacy PC’s as reconfigured and fully-optimised thin client devices, VXL’s CloudDesktop™ offers a seamless PC-to-thin client transition strategy without the cost of acquiring new hardware and maximising the existing investment.

Compatible with a wide range of the industry protocols, including Citrix, VMware View, and Microsoft RDP, VXL’s CloudDesktop™ represents a universal repurposing software solution for today’s PC estates.

Running on X86 base PC’s and supporting Intel, AMD and VIA processors, VXL CloudDesktop™ is extremely easy to configure and set-up and can be deployed via USB.

CloudDesktop™ also incorporates support for VXL’s optional, enterprise-level, Fusion™ Device Manager, offering organisations the ability to construct an effective and managed solution. Furthermore, as the devices are centrally managed, all software updates can be simultaneously deployed without having to undertake time consuming individual tasks.

Commenting on the launch, Frank Noon VP Worldwide Sales, added “Under the current business climate, organisations constantly have to balance the need to replace ageing PCs against the constraints of a tough economic outlook and stretched IT budgets. VXL’s CloudDesktop™ PC Repurposing software offers an effective and sustainable solution at a fraction of the cost”.
